What are phobias?
Phobias can be any specific fear that is getting in the way of someone’s day to day functioning or causing significant distress. Specific phobia are broken down into five subtypes including Animals (such as fear of snakes, fear of spiders, fear of dogs), Natural Environment (such as fear of thunder/lightening, fear of water, fear of tornadoes), Blood - Injection - Injury (such as fear of needles, fear of medical visits/procedures, fear of blood), Situational (such as fear of small spaces, fear of flying or airplanes, fear of heights, fear of bridges or tunnels), and Other (any specific fear that does not fit in an existing subtype).
Treatment for Fears and Phobias

- Agoraphobia : fear of it being difficult or embarrassing to escape a situation if/when needed, especially in the event of a panic attack
- Mysophobia or Germophobia : fear of germs or dirt, fear of contamination
- Emetophobia : fear of throwing up or vomiting
- Blood Phobia: fear of bleeding or seeing blood (often associated with vasovagal response of dizziness or feeling faint)
- Injection phobia: fear of needles, shots or bloodwork. Commonly associated with fear of medical procedures, doctors visits etc. Also often include a vasovagal response of dizziness or feeling faint
- Social Phobia: fear of social situations, fear of being judged or criticized by others (also known as Social Anxiety Disorder).

What Causes Phobias?
Phobias do not have a definite root cause. However, avoidance is thought to play a substantial role in reinforcing specific phobias, as well as increasing their severity. Gradually decreasing avoidance related to a specific phobia or fear can be very helpful. Treatment for Specific Phobias guides individuals through the journey of decreasing avoidance in a sustainable, realistic and manageable way.
