Young Adult Anxiety - Why So Common?

According to the NIH, anxiety in the United States is on the rise and it is most rapidly increasing among young adults. Our society places an immense amount of pressure on young adults to meet certain “milestones” during young adulthood. Whether it’s graduating college, establishing a successful career, meeting “the one,” starting a family, moving out on your own, buying a home… the list goes on and on. Couple this with the global context in which Gen Z and Millennials are living through young adulthood- a pandemic, divisive politics, devastating wars, climate change, violence, inflation/interest rates… it makes sense to feel anxious! Additionally, young adulthood is a time where many reflect on their future and make BIG decisions- education choices, career choices, life partner choices, family planning choices, friendship choices, moving/where to live choices. Decisions are a common trigger for anxiety due to the reality of uncertainty and the inability to know for sure what the “right” or “best” choice will be. The many decision points of young adulthood may also contribute to heightened anxiety. Similarly, there are many changes that are common during young adulthood that can prompt uncertainty and anxiety. These include graduations, moves, new jobs/careers, new relationships, drifting from friends, or becoming a parent. You are not alone if you are a young adult experiencing anxiety. You are in the right place!
